Local poet Chuck Salmons leads this workshop on ekphrastic poetry—poems inspired by visual art.
For centuries, writers have examined and written poems about other forms of art, such as paintings and sculpture. Known as ekphrastic poetry, such poems invite both the poet and the reader to engage with art in fresh and exciting ways, leading to greater understanding of the world and ourselves. For this workshop, participants will explore sample poems to see how poets engage a variety of artworks—including some of the most famous ever produced—to hold a unique kind of conversation. Then, participants will select and engage a work of art and write their own ekphrastic poems, with time to share with the group.
Chuck Salmons has served as part of the leadership of the Ohio Poetry Association for over a decade. His poems have appeared in numerous journals, including Chiron Review, Evening Street Review, The Ekphrastic Review, and Sheila-Na-Gig Online. He has published four poetry collections: Stargazer Suite; Patch Job; The Grace of Gazing Inward: Poems in Response to the Art of Alice Carpenter; and, Surviving the Eremocene, which was released by Sheila-Na-Gig Editions in autumn 2025. chucksalmons.com
